Our History

We proudly invite your family to become part of our Camp Lakota Family History

100 Years of Lakota Campers

Since 1924, Camp Lakota has provided a nurturing and supportive environment for all our campers. Each Lakota camper is a unique individual. Lakota’s dedicated and outstanding staff, dynamic programs, beautiful grounds and lake delivers a most memorable summer camp experience!

Founded in 1924, and built on the grounds of a historic Sullivan County Estate and the Mamakating Park Hotel, Camp Lakota has been under continuous family ownership since the beginning. Indeed, Camp Lakota has always been about family, and has been providing safe, nurturing, and exciting summers for co-ed campers for 100 years!

Since purchasing the camp in 1985, The Mindich Family, our dedicated owners, have had the privilege of caring for your children for almost four decades, and look forward to continuing to do so!

Old Masten Lake

Dr. Bruce Mindich himself was a camper, counselor, and camp doctor at Lakota before deciding to buy the sprawling camp on Masten Lake. It was his headline from the first advertisement that we all remember: “We loved it so much, we bought it!”

Our two hundred acres along Masten Lake have been the foundation for unforgettable summers for thousands of campers. Lakota is fortunate to enjoy a wealth of natural beauty and we are set to take advantage of its fabulous grounds and setting.

Flagpole

Our gorgeous wooded surroundings offer endless trails which continue to be used for hiking, camping, horseback riding, camp-outs and nature explorations. Masten Lake, the heartbeat of camp, has always boasted great waterskiing, sailing, canoeing, rowing, and swimming.

As Lakota has grown over the years so has its wonderful facility, which now features studio and performance spaces, pools, athletic fields, courts, including our newly renovated tennis and pickleball facility!

Lakota gets its name from the Native American tribe who revered the beauty in nature, and who believed in strong alliances among people. Lakota means “Friendly and United,” – We couldn’t think of a more perfect name for our very special camp.
